The Springboard Awards
The Archie-Brown Springboard Awards help outstanding African American youth get to their next level of personal development. Each year, with the assistance of family and community members in Oakland, California and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, we select two awardees to receive cash or sponsorships. Past award recipients have enrolled in photography classes, attended tennis camp, traveled and conducted research, and bought art supplies and computer hardware. Read more about our awardees here.

Background

The fund is inspired by our family father and grandfather, Charles G. Archie.
My name is Cedric Brown. I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and now live in Oakland, California. For almost 25 years I’ve been a community investor, educator, and artist.
This award was inspired by a conversation with my grandfather, Charles G. Archie, when I was a college freshman. He wondered aloud what he might have become had he been able to attend college instead of working in a tobacco factory after he graduated from a segregated high school back in 1932. He was a loving and respected father of nine and grandfather of 33. We use his high school photo as a logo to salute his hard work, great integrity, and the need for potential to be realized.
My family’s hope is that – as its name indicates – the Springboard Award will propel the recipients to greater achievements and fulfillment of their promise.
